Saturday, February 9, 2008, sunshine and clear skies welcomed over 400 people, who came eagerly from surrounding areas to receive the maps that would guide them on their way to find the Best Chowder in Bodega Bay. This year three restaurants were nipping at the heels of last year’s winner, pushing them to excellence. Cudo’s to the The Spud Point Crab Company – now three years in a row - for earning the winning votes. While most tasters immediately detected the majority of the spices – a garlic lover’s delight, some spices were not so easy to detect. One taster even likened Carolyn’s chowder to “Thanksgiving Dinner in a Bowl.” Another wanted to be quoted the chowder tasting almost “Orgasmic.” Now that’s hard to beat. Three restaurants were in a tie for second place: The Tides Wharf, The Blue Water Bistro and The Sandpiper. Tasters likened the Tides chowder to the most traditional chowder – consistent and dependable. Truly rich with the most appealing aroma. Participants were more than surprised to find the Blue Water Bistro, with its breath-taking views, and innovative chowder filled with tidbits of Mahi Mahi, Salmon and clams. This added an elegant heartiness. Amanda Vineyard and her staff charmed one and all as they came in. Others found the Sandpiper chowder creamy and as good as ever, living up to their saying on the Tee shirts – Please Don’t Eat the Chowder…. Savor It. Again this year people were delighted to find Claudio and Betsy serving their Manhattan tomato-based chowder at Claudio’s Trattoria. Many who were used to the traditional chowder enjoyed the Italian slant on the chowder. Mama Mia that’s a spicy chowder! Sophie and daughter Maren greeted tasters at the Boathouse with delightful hospitality while the guests enjoyed a great fresh chowder laden crunchy veggies. Dee’s Deli and Catering and Brisas del Mar both received many compliments about their chowder. Dee’s chowder tasters found a hint of smoked bacon her fresh clams just danced in the chowder. Tasters were glad to find that Brisas Del Mar had opened earlier this season to partake in the tastings. Many found good blend of herbs, veggies, all with a hint of a Mexican flair. Many people were almost overwhelmed with so many choices this year and found that they had to go back and “re-taste” the chowders before they could make a decision. Often folks said they were surprised to find that “after all these years” there are so many restaurants, new ones unknown to them, here in Bodega Bay, and look forward to coming back and trying them all.
